Burgundy and Bordeaux Continue to Dominate
It’s the same old story at recent sales – if you want top wines, you’ll have to dig deep.
Auction bidders are showing no signs of fatigue with strong results at wine auctions in the past week.
Acker, Merrall & Condit’s New York sale on October 20 achieved $3 million in sales, with the collection of a Spanish wine lover known as The Conquistador taking center stage.
Wines from CVNE, La Rioja Alta and Vega Sicilia exceeded pre-sale estimates, but it was – as usual – Burgundy and Bordeaux that dominated proceedings, with a six-pack of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s 1999 Romanée-Conti selling for $80,275. A six-bottle case of 1966 Petrus reached $12,350.
The Zachy’s sale in White Plains on October 21 also saw high prices achieved, especially for Burgundy.Featuring wines from the Forbes collection and the holdings of Dr Aziz Khan, buyers pushed the boat out for big name bottles.
A three-bottle lot of 1978 Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Clos des Ducs reached $2205, almost doubling its high pre-sale estimate. Two magnums of the same vintage realized $3185.
A six-liter bottle of 1969 Dujac Morey-Saint-Denis fetched $8575 and a jeroboam of 2005 Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet La Cabotte achieved $2695.
Bordeaux wasn’t dragging its heels when it came to prices achieved either. A dozen bottles of 2000 Château Lafite Rothschild went for $26,950 and a six-liter bottle of Château Beychevelle sold for $1715.
