Cru Wine Investment March 16 newsletter

Welcome to the Cru Wine Investment March 2016 Investment update
Fun Fact of the Month
“Because the winemakers of Château Cheval Blanc are highly impressed by the quality of this vintage’s wine (2015), they decided to use all for the first wine and produce no second wine
(Petit Cheval)”
Monthly update
Dear Reader,
Market update:
March saw the Liv-ex First Growth index close up a whopping 3%, the largest monthly gain since February 2011. It has been 4 months in a row now that the major index (led by Bordeaux) realised postive gains.

Also the En Primeur campaign for the new 2015 vintage kicked off last week. The world’s leading critics and fine wine professionals were invited to Bordeaux to taste the latest vintage. Expectations were high as 2015 is said to be a magnificent vintage. Cru Wine Investment was on the field to check the quality first hand.  In our opinion the 2015 vintage is of great quality, but not as homogeneous as 2010 when almost all the châteaux produced top quality wines. The northern appellations as Pauillac and Saint Estephe suffered from the rain during harvest, resulting in inferior quality for some estates. On the other hand, the more southern appellations (Margaux and Pessac Léognan) and the right bank (Pomerol and Saint Emilion) produced magnificent wines. A few of our favourites are: Château Margaux, Pavillon Rouge, Château Palmer, Vieux Château Certan, Château Canon and Château Haut Brion.
We will keep a close eye on these wines and their upcoming release prices.

En Primeur – 2015 Vintage – Bordeaux, 5th of April 2016

Château of the month – Canon
Wine critic James Suckling gave Château Canon a perfect score, 100points. Reason for us to pay special attention to this wine.

Château Canon, a famous Saint Emilion property is named after Jacque Kanon who bought the estate in 1760. Since 1996 it has been owned by Chanel, who also owns Château Rauzan-Ségla in Margaux.
The substantial estate, covering 22 hectares, is on Saint Emilion’s famous limestone plateau close to the town. The vines have an average age of 25 years and are generally planted with a southerly or south-westerly exposure.

75% of the wine is Merlot and 25% is Cabernet Franc. After the grapes are hand-picked, they are fermented in traditional cone-shaped vats, before spending 18 months ageing in oak barrels,
half of them new. A wine to watch!
