Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España, or more commonly known as CVNE, have just released “one of the best Imperial Gran Reservas” from their portfolio. The 2015 vintage, which scores a sharp 97 points from James Suckling, offers remarkable value for money at just £215 per 6 bottles in bond. |
Established in 1879 in Haro, Rioja by brother duo Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, James Suckling commends the most recent release of the Imperial Gran Reserva cuvée as one of the best CVNE have had “in a very long time”. With more recent releases receiving an average score of 94 Points from Suckling, the jewel in the crown which is only produced in exceptional vintages, is an expression of the best grapes from the best vineyards, and 2015 offers “fantastic structure and length” with a finish “that goes on for minutes”. From vines with an average age of 40-years-old, the 2015 vintage in Rioja is one of the best since 2010 and the fruit profile is prolific. Handfuls of black fruits imbedded with hints of raspberries and potpourri as you first pour, left for an hour, the notes develop into plump fruit with streaks of sweet spices. Already showing great complexity which unfolds significantly with time in the glass, this will benefit from another 2-3 more years in bottle to allow the tannins to mellow and be drunk over the following two decades. |

The palate is dominated by beautifully sweet fruit; raspberries and blueberries make way to ripe cherries and dark chocolate, all of which are framed by bright, marked acidity and supremely polished, finely grained tannins that are noticeably chewy but so well integrated. The finish goes on and on, this is a truly terrific Rioja right now but will be even better after a few years in the cellar.’ (2021) 97 Points James Suckling ‘This is very ripe with blackberries, dried fruit, toasted oak and black licorice on the nose. Full-bodied with ultra-fine, linear tannins and a racy, refined finish. This has fantastic structure and length. It goes on for minutes. It needs time to open and refine even more. One of the best Imperiale Gran Reservas in a very long time. Drink after 2023.’ |
