CHÂTEAU BEYCHEVELLE

Château Beychevelle boasts one of the most impressive châteaux in the whole of the Médoc. The fourth-growth estate is located on the left bank of the Gironde estuary in the extreme southeast of the Saint Julien appellation, which helps to protect and regulate the 30-year-old vines from the extremes of the climate. The 90-hectare vineyard is planted with the Medoc’s four traditional grape varieties, with the Cabernet Sauvignon thriving on the deep Garonne gravel, producing wines which are known for their supple and rich texture, the best of which can be kept for several decades. At the beginning of the 17th century the first Duke of Épernon was the owner of the property. The reputation of this great French admiral was such that as boats passed in front of the estate, they would lower their sails to show their allegiance. This deep mark of respect gave rise to the Château’s emblem and logo on the bottle; a ship with the sails at half-mast. Its name in Gascon, Bêcha vêla, meaning “baisse voile” (“lower the sails”), later becoming Beychevelle.
