Château Angelus

CHÂTEAU ANGÉLUS

Bearing associations with the James Bond franchise and a number of Michelin starred restaurants in the more recent past, to say Château Angélus is unique is an understatement. Very few Bordeaux estates have been under the same or family ownership since before the French Revolution, but remarkably Stéphanie de Boüard is now the 8th generation to take the helm at Angélus, with her ancestor Jean de Boüard first acquiring it in 1782. In 1920, the then owner Maurice de Boüard increased plantings of Cabernet Franc (also known as Bouchet in France) to honour his wife Elizabeth Bouchet. This decision made purely for love, is part of what makes Angélus such a unique wine today, featuring one of the highest percentages of this extremely fashionable grape variety that you will see anywhere in Bordeaux, which gives “a distinctive sculpted, floral perfume and fresh structure” to the wine according to Jane Anson.

Why owning a Château Angélus wine is a must

Anyone who sees a bottle of Angélus today, will instantly recognise its famous label with its striking black and gold writing, surrounding the bell. This was first created in 1945 and pays homage to the bells that can be heard from three neighbouring churches when one walks through the south facing slopes of the vineyard right by the Château. The estate’s commitment to Cabernet Franc adds a unique character to its offerings, marked by a refined aroma and structure praised by wine enthusiasts.
