du Tertre 2011

du Tertre

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 91.0

Existing since the 12th century, and with a vineyard that has been predominantly unchanged since 1855, Château du Tertre is steeped in history. Existing on one of the highest hills in Margaux, this fifth growth estate boasts 52 hectares of vineyard which are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.43%), Merlot (c.19%), Cabernet Franc (c.19%) and Petit Verdot (c.5%). Its excellent terroir is mostly gravel with some sandy soils and bears similarities to some second and third growths. Situated near a forest, it has a slightly cooler micro-climate which contributes to the freshness of the wines. From 2008 onward the château began to experiment with biodynamic farming techniques, with the aim to become fully biodynamic in the future. De Tertre were one of the first estates in Bordeaux to use the cement Nomblot egg-shaped vats. Using four of these in total during the wine’s vinification, they help to add a minerality to the wine. From here the wine is aged in 50% new oak barrels and is lightly fined with egg whites. A silky, delicate wine, this Margaux staple is imbued with finesse and femininity.

Dark fruit with a slight sourness like elderberry. Dark and savoury and almost earthy on the palate. Tannins keeping a tight grip on the fruit. Very hard work and bitter. (JH)

An estate that has eyes on it right now as it changes hands from the Albada to the Helfrich family. At this point winemaker Frederic Ardouin had been there for three years, and has made a wine with a supple quality to the tannins, and plenty of juice running through it. Very much ready to enjoy and will give a ton of pleasure. Easy to recommend. 10% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 30% new oak.
