Château Duhart Milon’s first wine is often seen as a “model” of Pauillac, respected for its robust character and intense colour, with an aroma akin to rich sap. Run by Domaines Barons de Rothschild of Château Lafite Rothschild fame, Duhart Milon refuses to be overshadowed by its illustrious counterpart, and creates superb wines that enables the estate to stand out on the map. Its 76-hectare vineyard is composed of Merlot (33%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (67%) which are then aged for 14 months in 50% new oak barrels. Château Duhart Milon is usually best after about 8-12 years of bottle ageing.

The 2016 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon and 33% Merlot picked between 26 September and 12 October with around 13.3% alcohol, slightly higher than in 2015 that suffered a little dilution. The bouquet is tightly wound with blackberry, cigar box and sous-bois aromas that gently unfold in the glass. This is classic, conservative Duhart-Milon. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a crisp line of acidity, just a touch of black pepper enlivening the black fruit. Overall, this represents in some ways a return to the slightly more austere style of Duhart-Milon, yet there is perhaps now more approachability and certainly plenty of freshness. For me, this is a step up from the 2015 and it comes recommended.

I remember how delicious this was at en primeur, and it remains a stately, elongated, perfectly poised Pauillac. Its austere, certainly, but is also full of rich fruit pared down by a slate texture, the sense of minerality scraping along the palate as you approach the blackcurrant leaf and tobacco finish. Its excellent quality, and clearly a vintage that suits the personality of Duhart - juicy but restrained. Matured in 50% new oak.
