Château de Fonbel is located in St Emilion and has just over 16 hectares of vineyard. The estate is owned by Alain Vauthier, proprietor of the celebrated Chateau Ausone and his daughter Pauline is firmly in charge at Fonbel! Around 8,000 cases are made each year, offering a very easy-drinking introduction to claret. The vineyards have the highest planting of Carmenère in Bordeaux, which contribute to Fonbel’s unique style. There are no facilities at the estate, vinification is carried out at nearby Moulin St Georges.

Pretty on the nose, lovely soft vibrant fruits and floral aromas. Supple and succulent, quite a sharp burst of red summer berry fruits on the palate, but the fine tannins give a soft bounce to the palate, balancing the lean minerality and quite austere acidity. Well delivered, smooth and round, soft and gentle with vibrancy and an easy drinkability to it. A touch light in terms of texture, quite linear and streamlined but it works, and this is really quite drinkable already. 3.72pH. Harvest 15-21 September for Merlot, 28 September for Cabernet Sauvignon and 26 October for the Carménère.

Deep crimson hue. Fragrant and fresh like Simard but a bit more grip and length on the finish. Just the right amount of mid-palate sweetness. Normally GV. (JL)
