Description
Upon being purchased by the Decosters in 2004, Château La Commanderie began a sustainable, organic farming approach, with consultation by Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angélus on their winemaking. This tiny estate sits at just six hectares in size and is a true Saint-Émilion hidden gem, with a small selection of vines also located close to Pomerol. The vineyards comprise Merlot (c.80%) and Cabernet Franc (c.20%). Typical of Saint-Émilion, the terroir features sand, gravel and iron deposits laced throughout the soil. Following a hand-picked harvest, vinification takes place in concrete vats, before the wine is aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months. Château La Commanderie requires a bit of time before it can be fully enjoyed, but after around 3-4 years it develops into a gorgeous, supple wine.
