Margaux 2013

Margaux

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 94.0

Steeped in history, Château Margaux can date itself back to the sixteenth century. Currently a First Growth property, Margaux is one of the finest wines in the Médoc. Owned by the Mentzepoulos family since 1977, Margaux has consistently created exceptional wines under the same family for the past five decades. Their wines are renowned for their perfumed elegance, which unusually is offset by a full-body that is brimming with layers of complexity, complete with seemingly infinite length. Their 80 hectares of vineyards are cultivated on multiple plots, with their best terroir on a 25-hectare parcel of deep gravel soils. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.75%), Merlot (c.20%), Petit Verdot (c.3%) and Cabernet Franc (c.2%). Most of the work in the vineyards is managed using organic farming methods, with a majority of the grape sorting still being done by hand. One of the most celebrated wines in the region, Margaux have frequently received the “wine of the vintage” award.

16.5
Jancis Robinson

Mid ruby with rim shaded to pale. Light iodine plus herbaceous nose. Mild and well balanced but in a very minor key. Certainly not pushed but there is little first-growth drama here – though admittedly it does build toward a pretty nice finish. But its difficult to see the value in this wine alas.

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

A Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine that reflects the vintage, the 2013 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. For the first time, there is no Merlot in the blend. Moreover, only 38% of the crop made it into Margaux, a finesse-styled, classic effort offering notes of spring flowers, blue and red fruits, decent acidity, sweet tannin, and a lovely, round, medium-bodied mouthfeel. The 2013 is not as concentrated as a great vintage, nor does it have the power and length of a top year, but it is a well-made, charming red to enjoy during its first 10-12 years of life.
