There can be no more iconic name in the Tuscan wine world than that of Antinori: the family has been involved in the production of wine for more than six centuries spanning twenty-six generations. Today the firm is run by Marquis Piero Antinori with the support of his three daugthers, Albiera, Allegra, and Alessia, all directly involved in the work of the house. They are today one of the biggest wine companies in Italy, and their innovations played a large part in the “Super-Tuscan” revolution of the 1970s. Tignanello, one of the earliest of those Super-Tuscans, debuted in 1971; it was the first modern wine of Chianti to contain a nontraditional grape—Cabernet Sauvignon—while omitting white grapes, and the premiere wine to be aged in small barrels.
