Vietti, Barolo, Cerequio 2020

Case Format: 6x75cl

Drink To: 2045

The grapes come from the historic “Cerequio” vineyard: one of the most significant MGAs in the entire Barolo winegrowing region. The average age of the vines is around 36 years. Limestone- and clay-rich soil with Marls of Saint Agatha present. The 2018 vintage was the first iteration of this momentous Vietti cru.

Intense ruby-red colour. The nose is intense, with notes of ripe red berries and fine spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied with fruity (strawberry, plum, cherry) and citrusy notes. The tannins are simultaneously fine and imposing, supporting the wine’s enveloping and persistent structure. Every ounce of the harmony and complexity of this cru — one of the Barolo region’s most special — stands out. The finish reveals balsamic notes that further enliven this wine, whose elegance and balance are rare indeed.

The 2020 Barolo Cerequio is fantastic on opening, with aromas of wet asphalt, dried raspberries, cranberry, and fresh roses. Medium-bodied, it has a more vertical feel through the palate, with fine tannins and fresh spine of acidity. Drink 2026-2040.

Monica Larner

The Vietti 2020 Barolo Cerequio (with 3,866 bottles made) has a little more hot-vintage thickness or softness on the mid-palate and shows aromas of dark cherry, dried mint, licorice root and naval orange. The fruit is a little more one-dimensional in 2020, although the acidity is there and the fruit tannins feel velvety and chalky. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and then goes into large oak casks for two years.
