The historic estate of Vieux Château Certan can date its history back to the 1700s, however it was in 1924, when purchased by Georges Thienpont, that it began to blossom into what we know today. A wine merchant in his own right, it was Thienpont who propelled Certan’s reputation. Today the Thienpont family continue Georges’ legacy, through creating outstanding Pomerol wines that are typified by full-bodied, rich dark fruit flavours and silken textures. Its current 14 hectare vineyard is planted with Merlot (c.65), Cabernet Franc (c.30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (c.5%). Their vines average 50 years, however one bizarre plot of Merlot dates back to 1948, making it one of the oldest in the appellation. Its terroir comprises clay, gravel and sandy soils, however its Petrus-bordering vines benefit from lots of blue clay. The final blend is aged in 50% French oak barrels for 20 months. Certain regularly received wide critical acclaim.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2019 Vieux Chateau Certan, composed of 78% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, is deep garnet-purple in color. Quite closed to start, it slowly reveals hints of plum pudding, blackberry preserves, and boysenberries with suggestions of Indian spices, mocha, and black olives. The full-bodied palate is fantastically layered, rich, and hedonic, with velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and decadent.

A sophisticated wine, glamourous yet refined with nuances of perfumed flowers, liquorice, crushed stones, dark chocolate and blackcurrants - all subtly presented but so fitting together. Great energy and clarity from the start, the flavours just hit the tongue and expand but slowly and carefully, the wonderful perfume permeating and driving down layer upon layer of softly sweet, ripe fruit and salty mineral freshness. Multi-dimensional in the best way - one you want to sit with and enjoy the aromatic complexities. Divine.
