What influences the price of wine?
A piece of art is difficult to evaluate because it is not frequently presented and exchanged on the market not. Wine on the other hand is easier to value because a new production is introduced on the market each year and given that each estate produces many thousands of bottles, transactions can occur on a daily basis, which in turn provides a relatively accurate market price.
Nevertheless, there is a long list of factors that can influence the price of fine wines: current brand strength, its region, the popularity of the producer, critic scores, the general appeal of the vintage, scarcity, age and many more.
Furthermore, even for the same wine and vintage, the value can fluctuate, if the wine label is damaged, if it’s not in original packaging, or if it hasn’t been stored in perfect conditions. We, Cru Wine Limited, certify that all our wines are SIB contract (Standard In Bond) which is a guarantee of quality and value maximization.
September releases
Every September, La Place de Bordeaux releases some of the most sought-after wines from the Rhone, Italy and the Rest of the World. This month we offered you some Opus One 2016, the famous Californian wine, it was rated 97 by Wine Advocate whom described it as “a very decadent expression […] with a provocatively effortless harmoniousness that is truly difficult to resist”. Masseto 2016, released beginning of this month has been attributed 100 points by James Suckling, “This is a wine that needs time to come together and resolve all of its amazing components. Reminds me of the legendary 2001. Try after 2023.” And this month featured the release of Almaviva 2017, Solaia 2016, Cheval des Andes 2016, Beaucastel Hommage Jacques Perrin 2016, all highly rated wines, oscillating between 95-100 points.
Dear Gregory Swartberg,
The Californian Index outperformance
The California 50 index consists of the last ten physical vintages of the five most traded Californian wines: Harlan, Dominus, Opus One, Screaming Eagle and Ridge Monte Bello. Top Californian wines have outperformed for the last 5 years many other wine indices, both the industry benchmark Liv-ex 100 (+32.5%) and the broadest measure of the market, the Liv-ex 1000 (47.3%) by rising a whopping 76.1%.
Within California, the Screaming Eagle index has been the biggest riser, posting gains of 89.2% since July 2014. Dominus has followed closely, up 65.3%; Opus One is up 57%, and Harlan is up 55.5% after a boost this summer. The Ridge Monte Bello index has been the slowest riser but has still increased 38.3% over the past five years.
When it comes to the most active Californian vintages, recent years have proven the most popular: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 have led trade by value this year. This comes as no surprise as vintages pre-2010 have become very hard to find. The market for Californian wines has broadened considerably over the past five years: the number of distinctive wines trading has risen fourfold, doubling in the last two years. While UK and Europe continue to be its main buyers and sellers, Asia has developed considerable interest for these wine over the past two years.
We, at CRU WINE LIMITED, see this trend in interest for New World wines occurring in other regions as well, namely in Argentina and Chile
