Cheval Blanc 2017

Cheval Blanc

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 97.0

The leading estate in Saint-Émilion, Château Cheval Blanc has continued to create beautifully complex wines that are unrivalled in terms of finesse, flavour and cellaring potential. Unusual for Saint-Émilion, Cheval Blanc uses majority Cabernet Franc in its blend (c.52%), resulting in a wine that is fresh, elegant and delicate. The 39-hectare estate is divided into 45 different plots where each one is treated differently to account for the age of the vines, soil type and more. Their rich terroir is formed of gravel, clay and sandy soils all which sit atop a sedimentary rock – this unusual mixed terrain is what allows Cheval Blanc to stand out. Château Cheval Blanc are committed to honouring the land that produces their magnificent wines and at the forefront of recent work has been an unwavering commitment to biodiversity and agroecology in a bid to allow the vineyards to thrive and to ensure the longevity of the estate amidst the ongoing crisis of climate change. Expect a gorgeous and expressive wine wrapped in velvety tannins and laced with aromatics. Each requires a minimum ten years of bottle age, with the best vintages lasting for 50 years or more.

Tasted blind. Mid ruby colour. Highly aromatic, grilled red peppers, roasted red cherries and strawberries with baking spices. The palate is glossy and suave; yet remains fresh throughout. There is a real hit of Cabernet Franc vibrancy – crunchy, leafy and edgy while remaining perfectly harmonious throughout. This is a wine that flies close to the edge but is beautifully executed. While the blend is shifted more towards Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in 2017, the Chateau Cheval Blanc is nevertheless a beautiful wine in every sense and shows the hallmark elegance and complexity of this estate perfectly. Deep ruby/purple, with notes of ripe dark fruits, violets, rose petals, and spice, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, ripe yet integrated tannins, terrific mid-palate concentration, and a great, great finish. Based on 66% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, give this incredibly floral, seamless 2017 5-7 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades.
