Issan 2010

d'Issan

Case Format: 12x75cl

The Château D’Issan is a flamboyant wine filled with a rich bouquet of aromatics. Formed on an ancient site, D’Issan is dripping in history, with records of the estate dating back to the 12th century, and a wine production that has continued for the past two centuries. Its soil is made up of multiple gravel mounds and 15m high alluvial hills which allows the ground to drain well and forces the vines to develop deep roots. This unusual terroir is what allows for Château D’Issan’s distinct characteristics. Its 52 hectares of vineyard comprises Cabernet Sauvignon (c.65%), Merlot (c.30%), Cabernet Franc (c.2%), Petit Verdot (c.2%) and Malbec (c.1%), with the vines averaging 35 years in age – with some older than 70. In turn, the combination of unusual terroir and exceptional methods in production has formed potent, silky textured wines that are some of the best in Margaux.

Jane Anson

Inky black cherry in colour, clearly ripe fruit that has been carefully extracted. Tension and precision, with black chocolate, slate, earth, smoked caramel and juicy blackberry fruits. This could be drunk now, but you know it will get better over the next few years or needs a good few hours in the carafe. Not exubertant, but steady power. Harvest September 27 to October 14, yield also 42hl/h.

A complete, medium to full-bodied, exquisite Margaux from this medieval, moat-encircled, compellingly beautiful estate in the southern Medoc, D’Issan’s 2010 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. The deep, gravelly soils mixed with clay have provided extraordinary aromatics. The yields were ridiculously low (22 hectoliters per hectare) and the wine tips the scaled at 13.7% natural alcohol. Production was small after the selection for the grand vin, and the result is a dense, purple-colored wine with beautiful aromatics of spring flowers, blueberries and black raspberries as well as hints of cassis, tar and charcoal. The wine is gorgeously pure, well-balanced, and soft enough to be approached in 4-5 years or cellared for 25-30.
