La Conseillante 2012

La Conseillante

Case Format: 1x900cl

Max score: 96.0

One of the most esteemed wines from Pomerol, Château La Conseillante has built a name for producing some of the regions most lavish and refined clarets. One of the oldest estates in the appellation, it is steeped in a rich history of winemaking that dates back to the mid-18th century. Uniquely positioned within Pomerol, the estate benefits from a mix of soils and sub soils with a terroir that consists of grey, blue and red clay, with iron gravel and sand deposits. Its 12 hectares of vineyard are planted with Merlot (c.80%) and Cabernet Franc (c.20%). In turn, their alchemic blend of fruit results in a soft-textured wine peppered with expressive notes of violets and truffles. Each vintage this wine is highly sought-after.

Deep dark crimson. Refined dark fruit – blackcurrant pastilles and a touch cedary. Very precise and fresh and has a nice tightness about it without being highly strung. Even with that refinement it has rich, velvety depth in the middle. Long without evident power. Cool and fluid on the finish. (JH)

Another classic wine from this fabulous estate is the 2012 La Conseillante, which I believe was the first wine made in their newly constructed winery. A blend of roughly 89% Merlot and 11% Cabernet Franc brought up in 70% new barrels, it offers an awesome bouquet of blueberry and smoky black cherry fruit intermixed with loads of Asian spices, melted asphalt, truffle, and licorice. This full-bodied, opulent, incredibly sexy Pomerol stays light and elegant, with silky tannin and sensational purity of fruit. Anyone who owns bottles should count themselves lucky, and those who don’t should buy some as soon as possible. It can be drunk today or cellared for two decades.
