Pontet Canet 2006

Pontet-Canet

Case Format: 3x300cl

Max score: 94.0

Château Pontet Canet is a large fifth-growth property in Paulliac who can trace its history back to 1725. It is known worldwide for its environmental credentials, due to the impact of its previous technical director Jean-Michel Comme, who is considered a leading figure in biodynamic practices. Its 78 hectares of vineyard contain Cabernet Sauvignon (c.63%), Merlot (c.32%) and Cabernet Franc (c.5%), and border the illustrious Mouton Rothschild. Taken under the ownership of Alfred and Michel Tesseron, the quality of Pontet-Canet has vastly improved, seeing it blossom into a full-bodied wine that is brimming with ripe black fruits and integrated tannins.

Tasted at Bordeaux Indexs annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Pontet-Canet has an extremely pure, vivacious, perfumed bouquet with crushed violets infusing the blueberry and blackberry fruit. But it is all about the detail and precision in this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth: lightly toasted black fruit, dried orange peel, cedar and a pinch of white pepper. This feels very cohesive and poised with just a touch of mint entering right on the finish. What a great wine from Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme. Go grab the corkscrew now, but dont feel that this wine has to be opened for another 5-6 years. Tasted January 2016.

Tight and unyielding at the moment, but with great pedigree, great texture and definition, this has lots of life to come. Poised and impactful, with juicy and mouthwatering fruit. Punches far above the weight of the vintage, one of those get-a-straw-in-the-glass wines: among the best of the tasting. Here tension rises, and your mouth waters on the finish. This is delicate but punchy, with perfect balance.
