BURGUNDY 2021 EN PRIMEUR

Welcome to Burgundy 2021. A growing season with more hurdles than an Olympian would care for, the vignerons in Burgundy have almost performed a miracle this vintage, creating some exquisite and beautifully classic wines, considering the twist and turns of the growing season. Due to this, volume is dramatically reduced. Peruse our report and register to ensure you know when certain wines are released.

BURGUNDY 2021 EN PRIMEUR BROCHURE

As the saying goes, diamonds are formed under pressure, and there are certainly some beauties produced in 2021 that most certainly deserve a spot in your cellar. These are classical wines that traditional Burgundy lovers will adore. As always, we’ll be choosing wines carefully for our clients. View our full offer here, which will be updated as further wines are released.

The Wines

From tasting a whole host of 2021 Burgundies it is abundantly clear that this is heterogenous vintage, with many climatic factors, as well as winemaking decisions affecting the quality of what is in the bottle. What might surprise people though is that despite these well documented difficulties, there are some truly delicious wines that absolutely deserve a spot in your cellar.

In fact, from the many discussions we’ve had when tasting with the producers we work with, there has been a common theme – the more classic, ‘Burgundian’ style is one they favour and would prefer to drink themselves. Selecting the right wines is of course key in a vintage with so many variables, but 2021 is littered with vinous gems, many of which will drink beautifully in the shorter term whilst the hulking 2020s take time to come around. With far lower alcohol levels than the past three vintages, the wines have a purity and vivid freshness to them that is so just so appealing.

Generalisations in terms of taste profile are difficult to make in this vintage with both terroir and each producer’s style shining though in the wines. If pushed to comment, we found the reds tend towards the red fruited end of the spectrum whilst the whites are blessed with superb tension, and concentration with Chablis turning out some truly great wines.

From the critics...

“There is much to enjoy, especially for those who have been longing for lighter, fresher, more fragrant wines after the recent hot and dry vintages.”
Jasper Morris

“Dismiss it at your own loss. Despite all the travails, it is a fascinating vintage full of ups and downs…but the “ups” can be outstanding.”
Neal Martin

“This vintage will appeal to real cognoscenti of Burgundian Pinot Noir, to the absolute devotees of fragrance, limpidity and soft, ethereal tannins – that gossamer touch that normally speaking should take decades to evolve.”
Matthew Hayes for Jancis Robinson

Allocations and How to Order

Producers made some stunning wines in 2021, but in minute quantity. Due to the high demand we have and very limited quantities of 2021 Burgundies, the wines will not be available to purchase online/via our website this year. Quite simply, there will not be enough wine to go around. To ensure that we can share allocations as fairly as possible, priority for the most desirable wines will go to those customers who are willing to look across our Burgundy 2021 range. Our team can introduce you to a number of lesser-known gems that you may not previously considered but you’ll love, or wines that you’ll be able to enjoy with an earlier drinking window.

If you are interested in securing allocations please contact our sales team at [email protected] or call the team on +44 (0)203 925 4526.
