Angelus 2010

Angelus

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 99.0

As one of the largest and most lauded Saint-Émilion estates, Angélus creates opulent, perfumed and complex wines laced with silky tannins and elegant fruits. A layered, complex nose, it boasts an abundant flavour profile of red berries and floral notes that are “bursting at the seams”. Despite only comprising a third of its blend, Cabernet Franc takes centre stage, adding a smattering of spice and aromatics to the wine. The remaining Merlot (c.51%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (c.2%) contributes to a traditional Bordeaux blend that is both luscious and well-rounded.

This had one of the highest alcohol levels of all the wines in this tasting, if the other labels were telling the truth. Tasted blind. Opaque garnet with a touch of brick at the rim. Lightly smoky. On the palate, lots of dried fruit and a little bit leathery, deep and firmly textured but harmony in power. Mouth-watering finish and great length. A touch of heat at the very end. (JH)

Tannins are still tightly packed, concentrated liqourice, spiced cinnamon, black cherry, raspberries, olive tapendade and black chocolate, this remains broad-shouldered and confident at 12 years old, at the very beginning of its drinking window but with years ahead of it. Two years before it was named Premier Grand Cru Classé A, and a time at the property when the wines were going from strength to strength. Harvest September 28th to October 21st. I have tasted this several times over the past few years, and it never fails to impress.
