Bellefont Belcier 2010

Bellefont-Belcier

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 93.0

Taking its name from the words “Belle Fontaine” or “beautiful fountain”, Château Bellefont-Belcier references the many hidden hillside springs of which the vines plunge their roots. Whilst it has undertaken different ownerships over the years, this repeated change in direction has not affected the integrity of the wine. Typical of Saint-Émilion, Château Bellefont-Belcier comprises a majority Merlot blend, averaging 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. A sensual character, Bellefont Belcier’s smooth polished tannins mingle with flavours of ripe red berries and hints of liquorice which leaves you pining after the next sip.

Panos Kakaviatos

The wine shows tension and freshness typical of the vintage, but late picking – harvested between 5-19 October – and heavy-handed winemaking trumps the vintage. The high alcohol (just over 15%) reflects some heat. Despite the acidity, raisin and overripe fruit come to the fore as do touches of caramel, derived from 80% new oak ageing. Even if the palate has density, the quality slightly disappoints for the vintage.

James Suckling

Wonderful aromas of black truffles and berries with hints of wet earth. Full body, with velvety tannins and a rich and chewy finish. Yet the fruit and acidity balance this muscular wine. Try in 2018.
