Beychevelle 2021

Beychevelle

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 94.0

A triumphant galley sweeps across the front of Château Beychevelle’s bottle, which pays homage to its 16th century ownership under Duc d’Epernon, Admiral of France. Today, the Château continues its unvanquished legacy, by creating a highly respected signature wine renowned for its rounded, lavish flavour which is occasionally punctuated by hints of chocolate. This is a luxurious wine, whose vineyards comprise an abundant mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon (c.52%), Merlot (c.40%), Cabernet Franc (c.5%) and Petit Verdot (c.3%) to form its sumptuous ruby-red colour. Often known as the “Versailles of the Medoc”, Beychevelle is a grand estate that continues to support cutting-edge contemporary art through the Beychevelle Foundation. Blending viticulture with art may seem unexpected for many, but Château Beychevelle reminds us of the creativity, craftsmanship and ingenuity that exists behind the cultivation of some of our most treasured wines.

Darkly herbal, spiced and perfumed nose. Supple, fruity, forward and lively, this has an initial vivacious and pulsing energy that settles giving some green pepper, eucalyptus and cedar notes as well as liquorice and clove which then dominate the finish. It starts well, with such pace, and you feel the fruit has been well worked with tannins that are silky and fine. This has density and chew which I love as well as structure and backbone wine overall finesse. Great potential here.

This barrel sample of the 2021 Beychevelle is composed of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps with redcurrant jelly, fresh black cherries, and dried bay leaves scents, plus wafts of cardamom, lavender, and forest floor. Medium-bodied, the palate is lively and chewy, with just enough fruit and an herbal lift on the finish.
