This was one of the first grand cru to be made as single vineyard Barolo. This is a classy and classic expression of Nebbiolo which requires time to develop all its complexity. The texture characterizes this Barolo: earthy imprint, density of fruit, vibrant and refined tannins. The acidity supports the important structure of this Barolo and lifts the nose which is complex, mineral, balsamic. Little red fruits and licorice are typical notes in Bric dël Fiasc.

This great vintage encouraged the Scavinos to extract more aggressively than usual. The nose is intense, with complex aromas of cherries, roses and liquorice. Fine acidity balances the power and weight of fruit, and the tannins are admirably rounded, yet the alcohol is obtrusive right now and the finish, while long, is very assertive. This is a vintage that needs time to become harmonious, but at present the balance is imperfect. Very promising, though.

Castiglione Falletto. Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Balsamic and almost a little ethereal on the nose. Generous fruit framed by bags of ripe grainy tannins adding contrast. Quite a powerful structure but nothing over the top. Muscular finish with cherry fruit and a hint of fruit cake. (WS)
