“My heart belongs to Calon”, said Château Calon Ségur’s eighteenth century owner, the Marquis de Ségur. Beating through the very fabric of this Saint-Estèphe estate, the heart is not only present on the label, but beats beneath the base of every sip. Planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.57%), Merlot (c.34%), Cabernet Franc (c.7%) and Petit Verdot (c.2%), the 74-hectar vineyard is supported by five-metre gravel, sand and clay beds that offer the perfect environment for the fruit to thrive. Fermented in enamel-lined steel vats for three weeks before maturing in 40% new oak barrels, Calon Ségur produces concentrated, weighty wines where the tannins of both the oak and grapes intermingle to form an intense flavour that is echoed through seemingly endless depth and length. This is a spectacular wine that has the fortunate ability to age many years after bottle.

The 2015 Calon Segur is medium to deep garnet colored. It reveals delicate cassis and plum preserves notes followed by hints of dusty soil, dried leaves, and bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate is a little hollow and chewy, with subtle savory flavors on the finish.

The 2015 Calon-Ségur, which was bottled in July 2017, has a very composed bouquet with blackberry, cedar, pencil shaving and light earthy aromas that are well defined. This opens nicely on the nose, revealing light crushed violet aromas and ratcheting up the fruit with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannin, well-judged acidity, surprisingly approachable (and I say that having tasted more of the last 20 vintages at the château). I like the finesse of this Calon-Ségur and contrary to my remarks from barrel, following its barrel maturation it has become more approachable. As such, you could consider broaching this within 5 or 6 years. One to watch—it may merit a higher score in the future.
