Carruades de Lafite 2012

Lafite Rothschild

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 90.0

The most famous wine of the Bordeaux region, Château Lafite Rothschild definitely lives up to its hype and its second wine is no exception. Located in Pauillac, the estate exists at the north of the appellation separated by marshland from the neighbouring Saint-Estèphe. Carruades de Lafite is cultivated on a specific section of the Lafite vineyard, near to neighbouring Mouton Rothschild. Its grape varietals range from 50-70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30-50% Merlot and 0-5% of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. First produce in the mid-1850s, it is one of the oldest second wines ever produced.
Dating back to 1234 Lafite Rothschild has a long history and has been under the ownership of the Rothschild family for over 200 years. Its respect for and cultivation of its terroir has continued for centuries, culminating in the creation of its ground-breaking wines. Due to its association with the Grand Cru, Carruades de Lafite is also a highly sought-after wine.

Finesse and savoury black fruits and mint leaf with gentle rosemary. It has a quiet concentation, together with layers of graphite, slate, and a mouthwating finish. Both quiet and yet powerful, it gives an insight into what makes Lafite so singular, and that is all you can really ask of a 2nd wine. Interesting also in how it differs from Petit Mouton, such a brilliant distillation of the difference between the two estates.

Tasted en primeur at the chateau. The Carruades de Rothschild 2012 is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a very light for nose for Carruades with brambly red fruit and gravel scents. It is a light Carraudes, perhaps missing a little weight in the mid-palate, with a satisfactory, classic finish that tails away a little too quickly. Tasted April 2013.
