Castiglion del Bosco is a Tuscan producer in the northwest of the Montalcino appellation. Whilst focus is placed on Sangiovese for its Brunello and Rosso de Montalcino wines, Castigliopn has a second estate for Bordeaux varieties in Riparbella.
The Bosco estate spans 2000 hectares of land with 153.2 acres of vineyards planted entirely to Sangiovese. The vines are divided into two distinct plots – the 20-ha Gauggiole vineyard and the 42-ha Capanna vineyard. The second estate Prima Pietra in Riparbella is an additional 10ha planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The complexity and beauty to this is really something with cherry, walnut, tobacco and cigar-box character. Sweet cherries. It’s full-bodied and deep with super intensity and power. Layered and beautiful. Really refined tannins. Some whole-berry fermentation gives this added character. Goes on for minutes. Try after 2025.

Mid ruby. Fragrant cherry and raspberry nose with a suggestion of oriental spice and cinnamon bark. Sweetly concentrated and then tangy cherry fruit that is almost a little tart on the finish, but remains focused and long. Bags of grainy tannins on the finish giving grip to the fruit. Still a little embryonic. (WS)
