Chateau de Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin 2020

Famille Perrin

Case Format: 3x75cl

Château de Beaucastel has the ability to trace its history back to the 1300s, when Pope Jean XXII ordered that four barrels of Châteauneuf be sent to him. Translating as “the Pope’s new castle”, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a region entwined with papal history.

Today Château de Beaucastel has continued to create spectacular wines with global acclaim. Hommage à Jacques Perrin is a legendary wine that has continued to push the estate to its winemaking limits. Cultivated on the Rhône’s complex terroir, its vines benefit from layers of marine molasses, covered in alpine alluvium.

Only made during the finest vintages, this Southern Rhône blend includes Mourvèdre from very old vines in their Courrieux vineyard. Considered one of the best wines in the world, this is an absolute favourite amongst critics, seeing their 2019 vintage receive a commendable 19/20 from Jancis Robinson.

Jane Anson

One of the original big name French wines on the Place de Bordeaux, now joined by many others but still leading the pack in terms of prestige and quality. Juicy, powerful, seductive, a ton of spice, underbrush, red cherry, bilberry, cumin, toasted oak, incense, powerful liqoruice and cocoa. So much complexity but also so much lightness of touch, just love this wine and its lyricism. Winemaker César Perrin effortlessly handles a vintage that had plenty of challenges.

Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is approximately 60% Mourvèdre (from the same parcel, year after year), with the balance a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Ripe plums and truffle-like notes mark the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and rich, with a long, velvety finish. Showing even more complexity and length than the regular bottling, theres a chance this could reach a triple-digit score down the road.
