One of the oldest châteaux in Pomerol, Clos L’Eglise can date its history back to the 18th century. Under the ownership of the Moreau family, Clos L’Eglise underwent a huge redesigning of its wine making facilities in 1975, which saw the increase of Merlot in the vineyard. Clo L’Eglise’s 5.9 hectare vineyard is planted with Merlot (c.70%) and Cabernet Franc (c.30%), and includes an old parcel of Cabernet Franc vines that were planted in the 1940s. Its terroir comprises rich clay and gravel-based soils with iron deposits. The final blend is aged in 100% new French oak barrels for between 18-24 months. The end result is best described as lush and full-bodied whilst brimming with ripe plums, chocolate and floral flavours. These wines are deeply concentrated and textured, and require at least a decade of bottle ageing before they fully develop.
At the mere mention of its name, this garden-like terroir inspires grandeur. Clos l’Eglise is situated at the break in the Pomerol plateau, which is the origin of the most remarkable wines of the appellation. Nature is at work here and, given the right conditions, promises to express a masterpiece among masterpieces.

Clos L’Eglise, Pomerol is an incredible charmer, evoking immediate pleasure and certain seduction. When it reveals its elegance, its roundness, its opulence it pays tribute to its origins, rare and inimitable. Clos l’Eglise is a philanthropist who leaves behind, on meeting, the persistent memory of a tender emotion.

James Suckling

This has a pretty nose of chocolate, praline, blueberries, lavender and bramble berries. It’s medium-bodied with firm, compact tannins. Firm and focused with an enticing bitter chocolate character throughout. Some smoked wood. Intense and tightly wound. Opens on the palate. Try in 2027.

Aromas of ripe plums and raspberries mingled with hints of rose petals and toasty new oak preface the 2020 Clos lEglise, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping wine with a broad attack that segues into a fleshy core of fruit, with powdery extract asserting itself on the youthfully chewy finish.
