Clos l’Eglise 2022

Clos L'Eglise

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 97.0

One of the oldest châteaux in Pomerol, Clos L’Eglise can date its history back to the 18th century. Under the ownership of the Moreau family, Clos L’Eglise underwent a huge redesigning of its wine making facilities in 1975, which saw the increase of Merlot in the vineyard. Clo L’Eglise’s 5.9 hectare vineyard is planted with Merlot (c.70%) and Cabernet Franc (c.30%), and includes an old parcel of Cabernet Franc vines that were planted in the 1940s. Its terroir comprises rich clay and gravel-based soils with iron deposits. The final blend is aged in 100% new French oak barrels for between 18-24 months. The end result is best described as lush and full-bodied whilst brimming with ripe plums, chocolate and floral flavours. These wines are deeply concentrated and textured, and require at least a decade of bottle ageing before they fully develop.
At the mere mention of its name, this garden-like terroir inspires grandeur. Clos l’Eglise is situated at the break in the Pomerol plateau, which is the origin of the most remarkable wines of the appellation. Nature is at work here and, given the right conditions, promises to express a masterpiece among masterpieces.

Clos L’Eglise, Pomerol is an incredible charmer, evoking immediate pleasure and certain seduction. When it reveals its elegance, its roundness, its opulence it pays tribute to its origins, rare and inimitable. Clos l’Eglise is a philanthropist who leaves behind, on meeting, the persistent memory of a tender emotion.

Jeb Dunnuck

From an incredible terroir in the heart of Pomerol (just across the street from LEglise Clinet), the 2022 Clos LEglise includes slightly less Merlot than usual and is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. It has a ripe, sexy, full-bodied profile as well ample red, blue, and black fruits, notes of graphite, chalky minerality, and chocolate, ripe, velvety tannins, terrific purity, and a great finish. This classic, opulent, sexy Pomerol is going to drink nicely with just a few years of bottle age yet should evolve for two decades.

The 2022 Clos LEglise, 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It features straight-laced, classic scents of warm black plums, blueberry preserves, and cedar chest, leading to suggestions of iron ore, Sichuan pepper, and fertile loam. The full-bodied palate is wonderfully bright and pure, with fresh black fruits and earthy accents supported by very firm, very ripe tannins and finishing long and mineral-laced. 1.5 ha of Merlot is being replanted, so there is a higher percentage of Cabernet Franc this year, which really lends a shine to the wine! pH 3.75.
