Domaine Rostaing, Cote Rotie, La Landonne 2020

Rene Rostaing

Case Format: 6x75cl

The Rostaing estate dates to 1971 when René Rostaing began tending a few plots of family vineyards. Pierre Rostaing has now been charge of the domaine since 2015. The Rostaing mystique grows further with the prized single-vineyard wines, La Landonne and Côte Blonde. These are extraordinary expressions of two very different terroirs. Landonne is dark and powerful, while Côte Blonde is lithe and explosive; yet both are imbued with the finesse for which Rostaing is famed. Brilliant violet. Ripe black and blue fruit, cherry cola, olive and a pungent floral note on the deeply perfumed nose; a peppery element adds complexity. Plush blackberry, bitter cherry and spice cake flavours display excellent clarity and take a sweeter turn with air. The supple, extremely persistent finish shows superb detail, and pliant tannins fold quickly into the sappy, strikingly persistent dark fruit.

Joe Czerwinski

Reasonably floral and red-fruited at the moment, the 2020 Cote Rotie la Landonne may not have the richness and power of the very best vintages, but its still a terrific wine. Tasted as a barrel sample drawn just hours earlier, in addition to those violets and raspberries, its also marked by the vineyards characteristic dark notes of roasted meat, black olives and espresso, ample tannins and a long, silky-textured finish.

Classically dark, brooding fruits, this has length and depth, with good balance even though the acidity is quite low. With its intense and muscular tannins, this is for the long term. Four weeks in tank, 18 months in oak (limited newoak), with natural yeasts and as many stems as possible.
