Ducru Beaucaillou 2017

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 98.0

Silky tannins embrace a fruity, rounded palate in the Château Ducru Beaucaillou’s first wine. Benefitting from its proximity to the Gironde River estuary, this estate experiences a unique microclimate where harsh winters and scorching summers are usually regulated. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to its ‘Beaux Caillous’ or beautiful pebbles, which pays homage to the Gunzian gravel that decorates the Ducru-Beaucaillou’s terroir. Its 50 hectares of vineyards comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.65%), Merlot (c.25%), Cabernet Franc (c.5%) and Petit Verdot (c.5%). Requiring around a decade of bottle ageing before reaching its maximum potential, Ducru-Beaucaillou present a pleasing wine that will continue to develop from strength to strength.

Tom Parker MW

Tasted blind. Deep ruby colour. Quite mineral and cool on the nose – there is a leafy edge of pencil shavings against fresh blackcurrant. Vibrant, lively fruit on the palate – a mix of red and black fruit together. The structure is sinewy, promoting more of the leafy, graphite tones. This is chiselled and firm for now, it will require patience. (TP)

The 2017 Ducru-Beaucaillou is the first wine of the fantastic vertical tasting held by Bruno Borie. It has both a deep and elegant bouquet of dark berries, blueberry, spices, and blackcurrant; as well as a fine palate, polished tannins, and a perfectly balanced texture. This is not the most perfumed of the line-up but both the texture and tension are very elegant. This is a worthy emissary of this underestimated vintage.
