Ducru Beaucaillou 2022

Ducru-Beaucaillou

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 99.0

Silky tannins embrace a fruity, rounded palate in the Château Ducru Beaucaillou’s first wine. Benefitting from its proximity to the Gironde River estuary, this estate experiences a unique microclimate where harsh winters and scorching summers are usually regulated. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to its ‘Beaux Caillous’ or beautiful pebbles, which pays homage to the Gunzian gravel that decorates the Ducru-Beaucaillou’s terroir. Its 50 hectares of vineyards comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.65%), Merlot (c.25%), Cabernet Franc (c.5%) and Petit Verdot (c.5%). Requiring around a decade of bottle ageing before reaching its maximum potential, Ducru-Beaucaillou present a pleasing wine that will continue to develop from strength to strength.

One of the Médocs most powerful wines this year is the 2022 Ducru-Beaucaillou, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot that opens in the glass with aromas of dark cherries and berries mingled with pencils shavings, vanilla pod and spices. Full-bodied, broad-shouldered and muscular, with a core of ripe but lively fruit underpinned by a chassis of powdery, liberally extracted tannin that asserts itself on the finish, its a punchy, modern Saint-Julien reminiscent of a hypothetical blend of the 2018 and 2020.

Deep colour – purple-black to the rim. Cassis and blueberry fragrance with a toasted oak edge. Smoky and minerally as well. Smooth texture with a generous quantity of tannin behind. Concentrated, polished and long. Has the potential but needs time. (JL)
