Figeac 2014

Figeac

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 95.0

Château Figeac is a 40-hectare estate located in the west of the Saint-Émilion appellation. Its identity is defined by the vines used to produce the first wine, where counter to other Saint-Émilion producers, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc make up a majority of the blend (c.70%), with Merlot comprising the rest. Its singular gravel terroir is the only one of its kind in the appellation, allowing for the production of a refined, bold and distinctive wine. With touches of graphite and notes of spicey cedarwood, Château Figeac is a wine infused with biting energy and finesse, with a growing elegance that continues to develop with age. In 2022 Figeac was promoted to the level of Premier Grand Cru Classé “A”, which is only awarded to the most premium wines in Saint-Émilion.

On the palate, the subdued fruit on the attack is a reminder that the right bank struggled in 2014 to achieve the same level of success as the exceptional 2015s and 2016s. But this is not a wine to dismiss in any way. A blend of 40% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Cabernet Franc, there is dark cassis fruit here, with well-worked silky tannins and a restrained elegance that is given a smile by a coffee bean and smoked almond edge. A well placed wine, working cleverly within its confines, not overstepping them, with huge potential for enjoyment. Drink in six to eight years, as this needs to soften a little.

Tasted blind. Dark purplish crimson. Fragrant but fairly low key. Cool and fresh without ingredient X. Solid, stolid but no magic.
