Fombrauge 2019

Fombrauge

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 94.0

Château Fombrauge is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru property. It is the largest Grand Cru Classé property in the appellation, with a 59-hectare (143-acre) vineyard, and like many others in the region, has a Merlot-dominant blend. All of these factors contribute to a fresh and abundant wine that is best after at least five years of bottle ageing. Its sprawling vineyard means that it has a diverse range of soils that include chalky clay on limestone to iron-rich deposits and molasse soils. Fombrauge therefore has a highly complex terroir which is unusual for the appellation. Today the vineyards are planted with c.85% Merlot and c.15% Cabernet Franc, with the vines averaging about 30 years of age.

Full, rich and ripe nose. This is heady with great drive and definition, a full, bold style with tannins and mouth watering acidity taking the fore right now leaving some astringency on the palate still. There is generous and ripe fruit - cherries, figs, blackcurrants underneath the tannins and a lovely fresh mint tone as well as liquorice to it but it needs at least a few years to soften and integrate. The length is impressive and overall its well structured suggesting a long life ahead.

Touch of reduction on the nose, clear effort to keep the fruits to the fore, raspberry, red cherry and blueberry. This is good quality and vibrant, more pared down than in older vintages of Fombrauge, definite edges of flint and smoke, still big shouldered and muscular. Tasted twice.
