Gazin 2012

Gazin

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 95.0

Built upon the ruins of the 12th century Hôpital de Pomeyrols, Château Gazin is steeped in history, which is imbued into this classic Pomerol wine. A 26-hectare winery, its vineyards contain Merlot (c.80%), Cabernet Franc (c.15%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (c.5%). At Gazin they carry the harvest out by hand, before maturing the wine in 50% new oak barrels for eighteen months, and it is the contact between the fine lees and the oak tannins that see the structural complexity of this wine take form. Neighbouring the estates of L’Evangile and Pétrus may seem like stiff competition, but in turn, Gazin benefits from the exceptional Pomerol terroir, which comprises of a clay-gravel sub-soil. The result? A nose teeming with potent aromas, whose full-bodied palate is crammed with juicy red and black fruit flavours.

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 Gazin offers mature notes of mince pie, coffee grounds, and tobacco over a core of stewed plums and incense. The full-bodied palate is firm and chewy, with just enough freshness to support the dense fruit through the long, decadent finish.

This is certainly one of the great 2012s from Pomerol. What’s amazing is that it is 100% Merlot. Readers may have forgotten (or never knew) that a chunk of this vineyard was sold to Petrus in the early 1970s, but what remains is still a superb terroir and incredibly well-placed on the plateau of Pomerol, adjacent to Petrus and across the road from Lafleur. This wine tips the scales at 14.5% natural alcohol, which puts it right up there with the 2009 and 2010. This points further to the sensational success Pomerol enjoyed in 2012. It is inky purple in color, with a glorious nose of black fruits, an unctuous texture, and a full-bodied mouthfeel. Sometimes Gazin can show too much new oak in its youth, but that is not an issue with the 2012. This is sensational Pomerol and one of the great wines of this vintage. Give it another 5-8 years of cellaring and drink it over the following two to three decades.
