Haut-Brion 2013

Haut-Brion

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 95.0

Château Haut-Brion is the only property from outside the Médoc to be included in the Premier Grand Cru Classé (Classified First Growth) of the 1855 Classification and its viticultural history can be traced back centuries. Its Pessac-Léognan vineyard is planted to include Cabernet Sauvignon (c.40%), Merlot (c.18%), and Cabernet Franc (c.18%). Production for the Haut-Brion totals around 20,000 cases – smaller than any other First Growth wines. Château Haut-Brion is therefore highly sought-after. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats before maturation in new oak barrels for 22 months. Peppered with mineral aromas, this wine contains flavours and aromas of currants, smoky spices and cassis. With a higher Merlot content in comparison to its rivalling Médoc First Growths, it is both a brooding, voluptuous wine. The Château Haut-Brion also has great ageing capabilities.

Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Its bigger sibling, the 2013 Haut-Brion, is a blend of 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. This classic effort tastes like a Haut-Brion, a major accomplishment in this vintage. Slightly fuller, richer and more complete than its nearby rival, La Mission Haut-Brion, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as hints of scorched earth, barbecue, charcoal, red and black currant, Asian plum sauce and spice notes. Fine-grained tannins are present, but well-integrated, and the acidity is not excessive. The result is a relatively plush, mid-weight, stylish, potentially complex Haut-Brion to drink over the next 15+ years.

Dark brick colour. Intense nose. Big and bloody and arguably not as refined as La Mission 2013. But it doesn’t lack ripeness of fruit or tannins. Should be a long-term bet.
