Haut-Brion 2023

Haut-Brion

Case Format: 6x75cl

Drink To: 2060

Château Haut-Brion is the only property from outside the Médoc to be included in the Premier Grand Cru Classé (Classified First Growth) of the 1855 Classification and its viticultural history can be traced back centuries. Its Pessac-Léognan vineyard is planted to include Cabernet Sauvignon (c.40%), Merlot (c.18%), and Cabernet Franc (c.18%). Production for the Haut-Brion totals around 20,000 cases – smaller than any other First Growth wines. Château Haut-Brion is therefore highly sought-after. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats before maturation in new oak barrels for 22 months. Peppered with mineral aromas, this wine contains flavours and aromas of currants, smoky spices and cassis. With a higher Merlot content in comparison to its rivalling Médoc First Growths, it is both a brooding, voluptuous wine. The Château Haut-Brion also has great ageing capabilities.

CRITIC REVIEWS

96-98
Jeb Dunnuck

The Grand Vin 2023 Château Haut-Brion checks in as 52.3% Merlot, 38.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc. Its more focused and tight compared to its sibling, the La Mission Haut-Brion, but it has riveting purity in its black raspberry, currant, smoke, leafy tobacco, and scorched earth-like aromas and flavors. Its rich and full-bodied, with building tannins and a level of purity thats just about off the charts. As with most vintages of Haut-Brion, it should be given at least a decade of bottle age.

The 2023 Haut-Brion exhibits a more Cabernet-inflected personality than the richer 2022, offering up a deep but youthfully reserved bouquet of dark wild berries, licorice, smoke and pencil lead mingled with notions of cigar wrapper, nicely integrated new oak and spices. Full-bodied, deep and velvety, it’s layered and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit structured around abundant but velvety tannins, concluding with a long, controlled finish. Somewhat reminiscent of the estates successful 2006, its a blend of 52.3% Merlot, 38.6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9.1% Cabernet Franc.
