La Dame de Montrose 2020

Montrose

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 94.0

La Dame de Montrose is the breath-taking second wine from the illustrious Saint-Estèphe estate, Château Montrose. Montrose has continued to create acclaimed wines for the past couple of centuries and were one of the first ever Bordeaux estates to make a second wine. Only 800 metres from the Gironde estuary, Montrose benefits from an excellent microclimate that protects the vineyards against the frost. Their terroir comprises deep clay-gravel soils which enables the vines to thrive. The blend of La Dame de Montrose predominately features Merlot, which adds a silky and expressive texture to the wine. Production varies each year, but is usually formed from around 40% of the Montrose vineyard. This is a gorgeous wine which has the ability to be drunk sooner than its older sibling.

Soft purple flowers on the nose, quite perfumed and seductive tones with ripe black fruit, peonies, blueberries and plums. Rich and supple, round with mouthwatering acidity - clean and crisp, steely and mineral with a core of crushed stones, pencil lead, slate and liquorice-edged black fruits. Power and concentration - its plush and potent, but also quite tight with the flavours expanding vertically. Not as generous and openly friendly at this point but so svelte and well worked with a sense of style to it.

49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Lithe and fruit-driven with dark-fruit, mint and herbal notes. Tannins finely etched. Nothing forced. Natural feel and flavour. Clean, dry finish. (JL)
