La Mission Haut-Brion, Blanc 2023

La Mission Haut-Brion

Case Format: 3x75cl

Château La Mission Haut-Brion’s characteristic wines are imbued with a rich history that dates back to the 16th century. The property of the Roman Catholic Church, the estate was repossessed after the French revolution before being auctioned off to its first American owners in the 19th century. Today it comprises a 30.7-hectare vineyard, of which 3.7 are reserved for white grapes to include Semillon (c.62%) and Sauvignon Blanc (c.38%). Its terroir consists of deep gravel over clay, sand and chalk in the topsoil and sees the vineyard placed on two ridges of gravel hills. Situated between the Ars and Peugue stream, the estate experiences moisture even in the hottest, driest vintages. The dry white wines of Pessac-Léognan have a unique particularity in the kingdom of great white wines, allying complexity, freshness, intensity and harmony. The foundations of these wines are built on two grape selections, the Sauvignon – very often the dominating grape – and Sémillon, easy to maintain and ripen in the poor soils of the Graves with its sandy and chalky nature. The Sauvignon brings structure, freshness and fruitiness, often with a faint reminder of a smell similar to Muscat. With the combination of their excellent terroir and unique blend, Château La Mission Haut-Brion have created perhaps one of the best white wines in the region. This highly sought-after wine is a true jewel in Bordeaux’s crown.

James Suckling

A creamy, round texture with ripe yet fresh aromas and flavors, showing apples, pears and hints of peaches. Medium- to full-bodied, polished and satisfying. 65.3% sauvignon blanc and 34.7% semillon.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

A blend of 65.3% Sauvignon Blanc and 34.7% Semillon, the white La Mission Haut-Brion 2023 has a pH of 3.2. It races out with ready-to-go notes of fresh grapefruit, lime blossoms, and fresh pineapple giving way to wafts of fragrant mandarin peel, beeswax, and wet pebbles. The medium-bodied palate is tightly wound and elegantly styled, with beautiful tension and a mineral-laced finish.
