Lafite Rothschild 1982

Lafite Rothschild

Case Format: 1x75cl

Max score: 98.0

The most famous wine of the Bordeaux region, Château Lafite Rothschild definitely lives up to its hype. Located in Pauillac, the estate exists at the north of the appellation separated by marshland from the neighbouring Saint-Estèphe. Its grand vin is cultivated on a gravel plateau, which sees the vineyard planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.92%), Merlot (c.7%) and Petit Verdot (c.1%). At 107 acres the vineyard is one of the largest in the Médoc. Dating back to 1234 Lafite Rothschild has a long history and has been under the ownership of the Rothschild family for over 200 years. Its respect for and cultivation of its terroir has continued for centuries, culminating in the creation of its ground-breaking wines. Lafite Rothschild produces an elegant style of Pauillac that is brimming with flavour. Expect warm notes of cedar, truffle and tobacco, the lip-smacking tartness of cassis, and the vibrancy of juicy red fruits.

Georgina Hindle

A mindblowing wine and so Lafite – almost timeless in the sense that they have stayed true to this style today: ethereal, electric and nuanced almost to the point of understatement. On the nose theres aromas of smoked meats, charred cherries, spicy plums, tobacco, floral fragrance, mint and crushed stones. Mouthwatering acidity leads the charge on the palate, so alive and thrilling but still with so much detail. Its graceful, delicate, and not too concentrated or opulent, with perfect weight, balance and poise. A wondrous wine that delivers such pure and joyful drinking pleasure. A flawless delivery and one of the best of the tasting.

The 1982 Lafite Rothschild is at the peak of its powers today, and the two bottles I drank this year were both exceptional. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries and blackcurrants mingled with notions of cedar chest, cigar box, camphor and dried flowers, its medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, with an effortlessly elegant, harmonious profile and a long, fragrant finish. While this is far from being the most powerful Médoc of the vintage, it is among the most pleasurable.
