Leoville Barton 2017

Leoville Barton

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 96.0

Forming a poetic blend of plump blackcurrant and cassis notes, Léoville Barton have created a spectacular wine, that with age, develops a delightfully warm cedar character. Its alchemic blend takes us through moments of potent acidity, mellow spices and luscious tannins. Incorporating a mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon (c.74%), Merlot (c.23%) and Cabernet Franc (c.3%), Léoville Barton have created a Bordeaux that thrives amidst the Saint-Julien terroir. Its gravelly-clay soil sees the vineyard withstand whatever weather each vintage brings, culminating in a premium, longstanding wine that performs its best after around 10-15 years of bottle ageing. One of the fourteen Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the Médoc, demand is always high for Léoville Barton, and we can sure see why.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby. Dark-fruited and brooding on the nose – this has clear potential. The palate is very muscular, with a solid framework on which to build the fruit. Notes of cassis and spice are in harmony, showing the precision of the winemaking here. Rich and spicy but well managed. This is chiselled and very fine. Long and driven on the finish. (TP)

Deepest crimson. Dark, savoury and spicy black fruit with a lovely balsamic note but also a light vanilla sweetness and a more subdued graphite layer. Complex already. On the palate, this is succulent, firm but polished. Tannins are very fine, definite. A harmonious whole and a juicy finish. (JH)
