Leoville Las Cases 2008

Leoville Las Cases

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 96.0

One of the largest and oldest classified growths in the Médoc, Château Léoville Las Cases is the leading estate in Saint-Julien. Comprising Cabernet Sauvignon (c.61%), Merlot (c.21%) and Cabernet Franc (c.16%) the vineyard thrives on a terroir of gravelly sand and clay soils and features vines that average over 40 years of old, with some of the Cabernet Franc vines being over 90 years of age. Léoville Las Cases’ winemaking procedure remains as traditional as possible with grapes fermented in temperature-controlled wood, concrete or stainless steel vats. Some of the oak vats are over 50 years of age. Since 1987 Léoville Las Cases have use a state-of-the-art reverse osmosis machine to help extract excess water from the grape must. Originally considered controversial, this technology is used by many of the top chateaux in Bordeaux making today. The end result is a firm, structured a powerful style of Bordeaux wine. A highly tannic wine, it usually needs between 15-20 years of bottle ageing to fully develop.

One of the most classic, regal wines in the vintage, the 2008 Léoville Las Cases is made from 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Merlot. Possessing an incredible Cabernet character in its graphite, crushed rocks, green tobacco, and crème de cassis-like fruit, this beauty is medium to full-bodied, has integrated acidity, a deep, layered texture, and a distinct minerality and salinity on the finish. It’s just now at the early stages of its drink window, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it become one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage. It should hit prime time in another 4-5 years and keep for 30 years or more.

A classic style of Las Cases that is somewhat masculine for the vintage, tannic and backward, and less formidably concentrated than the 2009 or 2010, the 2008 needs 7-8 years of cellaring. Dense purple, the aromatics are closed, but with coaxing and aggressive swirling, notes of crushed rock, black currants and some forest floor notes emerge. Impressively built, medium to full-bodied, layered and stunningly concentrated, this is a sleeper vintage for Leoville Las Cases that should improve considerably, given how closed it was the day I tasted it. It is another 30+ year wine from proprietor Jean-Hubert Delon.
