Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2023

Lagrange

Case Format: 12x75cl

Drink To: 2036

Château Lagrange, Third Classified Growth in the 1855 classification, nestles in the heart of the renowned Saint-Julien appellation. Château Lagrange’s vineyard stretches over two Gunzian gravel slopes where the highest point of Saint-Julien thrones on the beautiful estate. Harmony is the key word for each and every man and woman at the Château. They never force Mother Nature, they merely guide her. Each year, the work in the vineyard, where attention to detail and age-old traditions are combined, gives birth to a unique, elegant, powerful wine able to age well over time.

Created in 1983, “les Fiefs de Lagrange” is so much more than a second wine. Produced from young vines (with an average age of 30 years) and planted on fine gravel soils for the Cabernet Sauvignon and clay for certain Merlots. This truly elegant wine boasts pleasant supple tannins. The Fiefs de Lagrange offers an intense aromatic palette with notes of red fruit and spices. A wine that expresses its character early, allowing it to be enjoyed young, it nevertheless possesses a very good ageing potential.

Vivid bright pink colour to the rim. Strongly perfumed with ripe jammy, plummy fruit, lots of red cherry, violet and blackcurrant but with strong herbal and menthol Cabernet markers on the nose too. Sleek and straight, lively though, this has a buzzy tone to the juicy fruit, tangy, and almost sour but stays the right side. Really well controlled, fresh and lifted but not overly so, lovely length and weight. Generous and easy to enjoy. A touch of plumpness too, no doubt because of the Merlot, with the Petit Verdot adding colour and a flash of exoticism to the blend. 3.46pH. Ageing 20% new oak.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Les Fiefs de Lagrange features notes of juicy red and black plums, fresh boysenberries, and ripe strawberries with touches of charcoal and damp soil. The medium-bodied palate delivers a crisp backbone and lightly chewy tannins, with bright, crunchy red fruit flavors and a lifted finish. The blend is 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 13% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.44.
