Masseto 2004

Case Format: 3x75cl

Max score: 100.0

One of the most well-known names in the Tuscan wine community, Masseto have been producing outstanding wines for the past five decades. A certified “Super-Tuscan”, it exists on a roster of great names that includes Tignanello and Sassicaia. Made under the iconic Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, until 2019 it was made solely in the Ornellaia vineyard before its own winery was inaugurated.
Situated on a spectacular hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, the estate exists near the small town of Bolgheri. Named after the rock-hard clusters of blue clay known as “massi”, Masseto wines are every single bit an expression of their terroir. Produced from predominantly Merlot, the wine is known for its complex aromas, rounded and opulent fruit flavours, and its tannic structure. This is a sublime wine that will age beautifully for years to come.

Aldo Fiordelli

A more complete vintage compared to the likes of 2013 or 2011, this is ruby in the glass and focused on red fruits, framboise sauvage, dry mushrooms, leather and wet earth. Flavours of plum and cherry are followed by ground coffee on the finish. This Masseto is firm, with acidity pushing initially silky then extracted and super-chewy tannins. Still nervous and rugged despite the ageing, yet showing layers of enticing complexity, it clamours for food.

Antonio Galloni

The 2004 Masseto is all silk and elegance. The 2004 is arguably the most finessed, silky Masseto ever made. Bright floral notes add lift and precision to a core of sweet red berries and spices in this supple, exceptionally polished wine. This is the height of elegance and polish with Masseto. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2024.
