Massolino, Barolo, Vignarionda Riserva 2017

Massolino

Case Format: 1x150cl

Proud producers of Barolo, Barbaresco and the typical wines of the Langhe, the Massolino family were lucky enough to be born in Serralunga d’Alba, an area of absolute excellence in the geography of great Italian wines. With tenacity and passion, they have been making wine since 1896. Azienda Agricola Massolino Vigna Rionda is the dream of their great-grandfather Giovanni, who founded the estate in 1896. In those days, it was a traditional Langa farm, producing fruit and vegetables, raising livestock and making wine. Their family is firmly at the helm of the historic estate that inhaled the vibrant air full of change of the late 19th century and navigated the tides of the first half of the 20th century. Today, they face the new challenges of the 21st century, in the capable hands of the third and fourth generations. They have always believed in Barolo and its austere uniqueness. They care for it in keeping with the philosophy that inspires their approach to wine – minimal intervention, to capture all the qualities that their soils and grapes can create in the glass.

They are Massolino Vigna Rionda and they are writing a legacy with their wines.

Vigna Rionda is one of the most sought-after Crus in Serralunga d’Alba, an exceptional place where Barolo expresses itself in a unique way. According to widespread opinion, the Vigna Rionda Cru is the ultimate representation of Barolo of Serralunga. Many people share this opinion. Vigna Rionda is a unique Barolo, impossible to describe in just a few lines and hard to compare with others, even those from the Serralunga area. A wine capable of complexity, longevity and structure, which come together with unparalleled elegance.

CRITIC REVIEWS

Aldo Fiordelli

A traditional style with long fermentation and maceration in oak vats at a temperature of around 30°C, then aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for up to 42 months, followed by a further 24 months in the bottle. The nose is impressively fresh and vibrant, with a mix of white pepper, watermelon, wild strawberry and mint leaf. Less restrained than usual, on the palate the attack is firm, still young, and chewy, with brilliant long acidity and a cherry kernel finish. It deserves time to develop more complexity.

Just mid ruby. Firm, concentrated, complex nose that pulls you right in. Hints of black pepper and just a suggestion of gingerbread reflecting the warm vintage, but with real lift. Full, sweet-sour cherry palate. Lots of generous but not sweet fruit contrasted by finely chiselled, polished tannins. Ready now but will hold. Will seduce many. (WS)
