Montevertine, Le Pergole Torte, Toscana IGT 2014

Montevertine

Case Format: 3x150cl

Montevertine is nestled in the heart of the Chinanti Hills, in the town of Radda in Chianti. There, only grape varieties native to the Chianti area – Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino – are grown. At Montevertine, simplicity, respect, extreme care about details and know-how are the guiding principles that inspire their daily work. Their winemaking method is extremely traditional and has been the same since their very first harvests.

Made from carefully selected Sangiovese grapes, Le Pergole Torte is aged for about 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels and for about 12 months in Allier barriques. The first vintage released was the 1977. It was the first 100% Sangiovese wine to be produced in the Radda in Chianti area. The grapes come from Montevertine’s oldest vineyards, planted between 1968 and 1999. It is aged for one year in Allier barriques and one year in Slavonian oak barrels.

James Suckling

A transparent wine with flowers, dark fruit and citrus fruit on the nose. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a bright and fresh finish. I love the dynamic cherry and vivid floral character. Mineral, too. Bright acidity. This is one of the best wines of the 2014 vintage in Tuscany. Auguri. Drink or hold.

The 2014 Le Pergole Torte has come together quite nicely since I last tasted this wine as a barrel sample shortly after the new year. The wine is now showing deeper dimension and a tighter textural constitution. Those aromas of wild berry, blue flower and crushed granite stone have come together with greater focus and precision. This wine represents a selection of the estates best fruit. The integrity of its perfume and the brightness of the mouthfeel speak to the talented winemaking team at this celebrated winery in Radda in Chianti.
