An illustrious estate, with a fascinating history, Château Mouton-Rothschild has been making wine since the Roman times. Under the management of the Rothschild family since 1853, it wasn’t until 1922 when Baron Philippe de Rothschild took the helm, that the estate transformed. Perhaps the most revered château making wine today, their grand vin is appreciated for its exotic and powerful aromas of cassis, minerals, tobacco leaves and graphite. Its impressive length and rich, rounded palate are typical of this breath-taking and often flamboyant wine.

The 83-hectares of vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.78%), Merlot (c.18%), Cabernet Franc (c.3%) and Petit Verdot (c.1%). The vineyard has a terroir filled with gravel, rocks, sand, clay and limestone soils and is situated on the “Mouton Plateau” which mostly comprises one large block of vines. The vines are old, averaging 50 years, with the oldest planted over 130 years ago.

Mouton Rothschild is not just known for its beautiful grand vin, but for bridging the gap between art and wine. It was Baron Philippe who introduced the idea of commissioning a famous artist to create a label for each vintage. Artists have included Dali, Miro, Picasso, Warhol and more, and all contribute to the exclusivity and collectability of this highly coveted wine.

The 2018 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc—there is also a splash of all the Petit Verdot they had, but it doesn’t even register in the percentage. It has 13.8% alcohol, which is relatively modest for the vintage. Deep garnet-purple colored, it straight away pops with bright, vivacious notes of crushed blackcurrants, juicy blackberries and redcurrant jelly with slowly emerging nuances of candied violets, stewed plums, licorice and black tea, plus a waft of dusty red soil. The medium-bodied palate is built like a brick house with super firm, super ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing long and savory with lingering mineral suggestions. This is so, so delicious and, due to the ripeness of tannins, approachable now. It will be difficult to keep your mitts off it for a good 5-7 years, when all those tightly tucked away nuances should begin to emerge. After that, it should improve over the course of 25 years or more and drink for 40+.

Im not alone in considering this one of the all-time great Moutons - it was awarded Worlds Greatest Wine is a competition last year that saw numerous rounds of blind tasting. Its worth your while to find out why - this is a powerhouse of beautiful fruits - layer upon concentrated layer of blackberry, cassis, liquorice, baked earth, cigar box, black truffle and the signature smoked and grilled spices of Mouton. The tannins are velvety but determined, holding on to their fruit with no intention of letting go for another few decades. 100% new oak. There is the tiniest touch of Petit Verdot in the blend but under 1% so it’s not in the official figures. 62% of production went into the grand vin. 3.78pH. 88IPT. The artist for this vintage is Xu Bing.
