Ormes Pez 2021

Ormes de Pez

Case Format: 6x75cl

This stylish St-Estèphe has been run by the Cazes for generations, the same family behind Lynch Bages, and as such the winemaking ethos is handled very similarly to its illustrious Pauillac stable-mate. With an impressive track record and fair price, it punches well above its Cru Bourgeois status. The vineyard area, divided into two blocks north and south of the village of Saint-Estèphe, extends across 33 hectares and comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.70%), Merlot (c.20%) and Cabernet Franc (c.10%). In recent years the wines have become richer and softer with more concentrated flavours of fruit which has been the result of using more new oak barrels during the ageing process, as well as an increase in Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Ormes de Pez prances out with showy scents of black cherry compote, wild blueberries, and dried flowers plus suggestions of spice cake and bay leaves. Light to medium-bodied, the palate delivers chewy tannins and bags of freshness to frame the subtle black fruits, finishing a little firm. The blend is 49 % Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot.

Sweet strawberry, orange, grapefruit, plums and blackcurrants, but the sweet jammy kind. This is fruit forward and expressive out the gate, round and so appealing. Spiced aspects from the Petit Verdot with a sturdy backbone in terms of structure and frame. Tannins are more on the austere side, fine and detailed, extremely mouthfilling but you can almost taste each one with the minerality coming through strongly leaving that clean wet stone taste in the mouth. Ripe and juicy dark fruit also. This is medium bodied with lots of precision in terms of detail. Lovely potential here. 5% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.68pH.
