Deep garnet-brick in color the 1998 RWT Shiraz opens to notes of Old Chesterfield, beef drippings, Bovril, sandalwood and sultanas. Quite elegant and fine on the palate, it is a little woody and finishes long and spicy.

Tasted at the “Rewards of Patience” vertical in Berlin. The 1998 RWT Barossa Valley Shiraz is to date, the only one raised entirely in new oak. It has a ripe, eucalyptus tinged bouquet that is dense and broody, perhaps less personable than the 1997, which shows more advancement. The palate is full-bodied with a heady, eucalyptus and balsamic tinged entry. There is certainly a lot of fruit concentration here that lends a slight viscosity to the texture, although the dominance of new oak seems to render it a little monotonous on the finish, deprived of finesse. This is enjoyable but not memorable. Drink now-2020. Tasted June 2012.
