Sloan, Proprietary Red, Rutherford 2018

Sloan estate

Case Format: 3x75cl

Hailing from Rutherford within the heart of Napa Valley, Sloan’s Proprietary Red is a wine that radiates the essence of this world-renowned winemaking region.

Sloan Estate, a celebrated name in Napa Valley viticulture, is known for crafting wines that exude power and complexity. The Proprietary Red is the pinnacle of their winemaking, meticulously sourced from their estate vineyards.

This wine is meticulously crafted from Bordeaux grape varieties, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. These grapes are sourced from Sloan’s own vineyards in Rutherford, where they’re carefully tended and hand-harvested to ensure the highest quality.

The winemaking process combines tradition with modern techniques, including gentle fermentation and precise oak aging. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for an extended period, often around 24 months or more, allowing it to evolve and develop its remarkable complexity and structure.

Sloan’s Proprietary Red is brimming with aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, and cassis, mingling with hints of vanilla, cedar, and a touch of sweet tobacco. On the palate, it offers a harmonious balance of bold, velvety tannins and a refreshing acidity. Flavours of ripe plums, black currants, mocha, and a subtle earthy undertone dance elegantly, leading to a long and memorable finish.

The Proprietary Red is a wine that encapsulates the opulence and power of Napa Valley. It reflects Sloan Estate’s deep connection to the land and their unwavering commitment to crafting wines that are both expressive and age-worthy. Whether enjoyed now or allowed to evolve further in your cellar, this Bordeaux-style blend invites you to savour the grandeur and enduring tradition of Napa Valley’s finest wines with every sumptuous sip.

I compared the 2018 Proprietary Red to a great vintage of Mouton Rothschild from barrel and Im still happy with that comparison now from bottle. Sporting a dense purple hue as well as gorgeous aromatics of blackcurrants, chocolate, espresso, tobacco leaf, charcoal, and gravelly earth, this big, full-bodied, concentrated, tannic wine is flawlessly balanced, incredibly precise, and as pure and classy as they come. It needs to be forgotten for at least 5-7 years and will have 30-40 years of overall longevity. Bravo to the team at Sloan for another magical wine.

A blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the 2018 Proprietary Red displays and deep, vibrant garnet-purple color. Baked plums, blackberry pie, crème de cassis and toasty oak notes leap from the glass, followed by hints of tilled soil, Indian spices, mocha and crushed rocks. Big, full-bodied, opulent and velvety, it has a solid structure and a very long, seductively spicy finish.
